Gagan Singh-Peg-Lamp Desk Lamp

At Design Interviews

Interview with Gagan Singh : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Gagan Singh : I wanted to design a lamp that is modern, minimal and aesthetically beautiful standing on a desk. Modern design also tends to get very industrial, machined and sterile at times. So my quest was to offer best of both worlds. Clean modern design and handcrafted warmth of the old world. With that in mind, many sketches and prototypes later the Peg-Lamp was born. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Gagan Singh : My main focus was simplicity and function for the end user and at the same time having a design that would invite conversation. Peg Lamp is a statement of modern design love standing tall on a desk. It looks simple on the outside but is very intricate on the inside. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Gagan Singh : We'd like to take this design to masses at affordable prices because we believe modern design should be accessible to all and not just to the affluent. We would seek partnerships from fabricators, distributors and retailers. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Gagan Singh : It's tough to say how long exactly because a creative mind is always thinking. Ideas brew or incubate in mind while you go about doing other things. So a lot of dreaming and finally putting pencil to the paper, I sketched out a lot of clean designs. I also love to make use of practical science in my designs which comes handy when you want absolute minimal pieces to a lamp but maximum function. After sketches I developed a lot of quick prototypes to get the proportions and form perfect. It took about 3 weeks working on and off on this project to finally have first fully functional lamp ready. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Gagan Singh : I love designing modern minimal lighting accents so this is an ongoing pursuit to develop this kind of lamps for the discerning. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Gagan Singh : All our designs are original and we take pride in handcrafting each piece. Our vision at Gagan Design is to produce very high quality modern designs and also make them accessible to all discerning souls so we'd definitely consider partnering with others who are masters in their fields so that we can realize our vision. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Gagan Singh : Clean, modern and minimal is our passion and this Peg-Lamp is a manifestation of exactly that. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Gagan Singh : Not any one in particular but inspiration comes from everywhere. We're in this business and keep up with modern designs that makes us happy. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Gagan Singh : Any one who appreciates modern design. People who like art, and unique things, people who love life, who are inspired are the kind of people who would love to own a piece of Gagan Design. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Gagan Singh : I'm not aware of any similar or resembling projects. This, I believe is unlike any other. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Gagan Singh : The name Peg-Lamp is pretty straight forward. The colored 'Peg' is the central point in this design hence the name. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Gagan Singh : When I was little, I used to make model airplanes out of used cardboard and ice cream spoons. My dad who was an aeronautical engineer in the Air Force at the time told something simple and magical that change how I approached design thereafter. He told me, 'everything starts with a paper and pencil'. I started sketching my designs before getting on with material and that was the best lesson in design development and product design I learnt in life. Long story short my best design tools is my ultra fine clutch pencil and sketch book that I carry everywhere. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Gagan Singh : Understated elegant simplicity that stands out off the crowd. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Gagan Singh : I developed this by myself at Gagan Design. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Gagan Singh : This design has best of both worlds. Its modern design used LED light along with nostalgic warmth of handcrafted wood. To top it all it has a dash of fun with the colored Peg and fabric cords. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Gagan Singh : Our insight into the target audience comes from experience and market research. People who deeply appreciate modern design not always can afford it. Modern design mostly is seen in boutique stores or under high-end labels which mostly is a little far from the reach of common man. We want to bring very modern, high-end quality products but at affordable costs. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Gagan Singh : Biggest challenge was fitting in and concealing a switch, fabric cord and LED strips in wood dowel that is just 11/16" in diameter. Running wires through the center of the wood dowel that's 24 inches long and of course sourcing good quality materials from across the globe and yet make it affordable. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Gagan Singh : International design competitions like A'Design award are very prestigious and offer a great platform for furthering great design and innovation. .Frank Scott: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?. Gagan Singh : Learning is a continuous process and every time you do something new or the same old you have an opportunity to improve. With every new lamp we design and craft for our buyers we try to finesse either the product or the process. .
